Problem
Finding and retaining the right talents are hard, on both sides.
41%
of the global workforce is considering quitting their jobs
80%
of workers planning to look for a new job are concern about career growth
>33%
Over a third of millennials plan to look for a new job post-pandemic
While 86% of CEOs in the United States mentioning talent supply chains issues as the number one priority, companies struggle to recruit, develop, and retain people. Organizations experience urgent and persistent need for entirely new skills, new employment models, new organizational structures, and new HR practices.

-
Range of salaries offered

Top skills required
-
Top benefits offered
-
Average listing duration

As an HR manager, I want a modern interactive dashboard showing up-to-date information about the global job market
Ideate
Because the product requirements are clearly outlined and defined by a lot of market research our team has already conducted. I combed through the preliminary research data and start to ideate the solutions.
👀How might we section the dashboard and indicate interactability clearly?
📚 Inspiration:
🧰 Design System:
In order to keep design consistency between my and the other designer on the team, I developed a mini design system for our dashboard:
💡Interview
7 Participants
988 dispatchers, deaf community event organizer
Prototype
💡 Design Solution:
Hover on me to see dark mode😎
Wireframing
🔍 Feature 1: Dual search bar
Enable users to query based on where (location) and what functionality
Lo-Fi
🔍 Feature 2: Filter
More refined filter capability after results have been shown
🔍 Feature 3: Info Section
Keep the information display to the right of the screen
✍️ Iteration I
Before
❌ Low-fi
❌ Do not support other functionality
After
✅ Hi-fi
✅ Added task switching panel
🔎 Moved filter to dropdown boxes
💡Testing and feedback (within company)
I quickly ran some casual user testing sessions with the engineers and PMs at our company to facilitate the iteration process and keep them in the loop. Here is the feedback I got:
-
Graph specific -->
-
Annual comp graph: salaries on x axis & percentages on y-axis; draw attention to the average compensation
-
Skills list: list view does not show the percentage well
-
-
Geographics is not a priority concern for HR
-
Global vacancies are not practical
Based on the feedback, I explored more options on how to present the graphs to give the users a clear overview and fit their needs.
✍️ Exploration:
✍️ Iteration II
Before
❌ Map is distracting
❌ Skills section is not clear
After
✅ Polished the graph
✅ Added percentage for skills section
🔎 Explored dashed graph and added timeline
💡Testing and feedback:
-
Could collapse to give more space
-
There's another dimension - time: how to add that
-
Could simplify the legend
-
Add a panel to compare current employee
✍️ Exploration:
Bar graphs:
Floating window:
✍️ Iteration III
Before
❌ Axis label is too long
❌ Not enough info
❌ Side panel takes up too much space
From here, a new design challenge emerged:
👀 How to add the floating individual employee panel?
✍️ Exploration:
💻 Final User Flow:
💻 Deliverables:
After
✅ Improved the clarity of bar graphs
✅ Added time to compensation graph
✅ Collapsed the side panel

✨ Learnings
0-1 is very different than improving an existing product. There's a lot you need to think through as a designer about the whole user experience and information architecture. The ability to comb through complex processes and problem solve is crucial as a product designer!
